Your responsibilities as a Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse in the Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) will include the comprehensive evaluation of patients who present to the Emergency Department with psychiatric or psychosocial crises, under the recovery model’s principles.

As a member of an interdisciplinary team in the emergency department, you will work with emergency physicians and psychiatrists to ascertain the patient’s course of treatment, assess the patient’s condition, and ascertain the severity of the illness and the potential risk to oneself or others. As a PES Nurse, you will collaborate with the services to coordinate referrals to community services or admission to inpatient facilities to the client’s requirements. In collaboration with the patient, you will assess and create an effective plan to identify and coordinate care for clients who require appropriate services by utilizing the Addiction and Mental Health continuum.

You will provide clients with brief interventions and, by the RN/RPN scope of practice, identify, initiate, and modify interventions as the patient’s needs change, as required by law. As a PES Nurse, you will provide Emergency Department personnel with guidance on assessing and managing patients with mental health conditions. You will establish a more effective care paradigm for patients receiving mental health services in the emergency department. The population is composed of adults, families, and adolescents. Required Qualifications:

Certification as a nursing education program graduate. Proactive or eligible to apply for registration and a practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta. Currently, the healthcare provider is certified in basic cardiac life support (BCLS-HCP). The successful completion of the ensuing complimentary courses will be required if the applicant has not registered as a nurse within the past five (5) years. Additional Required Qualifications:

A minimum of one year of full-time experience in the fields of addictions and mental health within the past three years. Upon successful completion of their final preceptorship at an Addiction and Mental Health site, prospective candidates may be admitted.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) is preferred. Experience in the field of juvenile and adolescent mental health is preferred. Familiarity with the mental health and addiction resources that are accessible throughout the Calgary Zone is preferred. Experience with verbal de-escalation techniques is preferred. A valuable asset is the comprehension of the Mental Health Act. A bonus is the ability to evaluate a diverse range of risks, such as suicidal, homicidal, and violent risks.
